Disruption! x Sunny Kim South Korea Tour

We had an amazing trip to South Korea.

Thank you to all the people who came out to our shows and for the wonderful support from the Australia-Korea Foundation!

In late September, we took Disruption! to Korea for a week of performances, conversations and some unforgettable meals, from Seoul all the way down to Gwangju.

Let's start with the most important part. The food. I never thought I’d enjoy it all but I even tried dried squid. Everything else from spicy clam soup, kim chi pancake to spicy clam soup. Sharing food with the band and our hosts were some of the most memorable experineces.

Seoul Institute of the Arts

We had a wonderful reception at the Seoul Institute of the Arts. We gave a masterclass on Disruption! with Korean interpretation from Chloe and Sunny, about how the project developed and some of the ideas in the music. Chloe did a session on building music using ABA structures with rhythm, Jacques discussed his various bowing techniques and Sunny demonstrated her solo work. The students were engaged and curious, and it was a joy to share the music with the next generation of Korean musicians.

Banjul Stage, Seoul

Our show at Banjul Stage was amazing, and it was great getting to hear and perform with vocalist Eunsil Noh.

ACC X Music Festival, Gwangju

Our performance at the ACC X Music Festival were incredible. The sound and stage production were extremely professional, and playing on such a large stage was wild. It was an honour to meet the festival's director, Won Il, whose vision for the festival brings traditional and contemporary music into such interesting conversation.

One of the joys of a festival is the other artists. We got to see So Percussion from New York, and we enjoyed chatting with them afterwards about possible collaborations in the future. Watch this space.

We were also invited to perform at the festival afterparty, a great way to celebrate with the artists and crew who made the week so special.

Thank you

Huge thanks to the band, Chloe Kim, Hilary Geddes, Jacques Emery and our special guest Sunny Kim, for their musicianship and comradery. Thank you to Won Il and the team at the Asia Culture Center and ACC X Music Festival, the Seoul Institute of the Arts, and Banjul Stage for having us, and to Eunsil Noh for sharing the stage with us.

This tour was made possible by the Australia-Korea Foundation of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
