Announcing Iron in the Blood, City Recital Hall, Jan 23 2020
I’m extremely excited to announce that Iron in the Blood will be presented at City Recital Hall Sydney 23 January 2020 as part of the Sydney Writer’s Festival. The Earshift Orchestra will be joined by actors William Zappa and Patrick Dickson.
For those that aren’t familiar with the project, Iron in the Blood is a musical adaptation of Robert Hughes’ iconic Australian history book The Fatal Shore. It was the major work of my PhD recorded and released on ABC Jazz. The won a Bell Award for Best Produced Album and received great reviews at its premiere at Riverside Theatre in Parramatta last year. It is timely that the work be performed again next year give its the 250th anniversary of Captain Cook’s arrival in Australia, making it a great opportunity to re-examine the reasons for Australia’s founding and who we are as a nation.

Four Winds 2019 Easter Festival
I’m thrilled to be joining the 2019 Four Winds Easter Festival for a range of concerts including a showcase of my work River Meeting Suite for Compass Saxophone Quartet, tabla, voice and sitar at the Aqua Shell Gala Concert for the 2019 Four Winds Festival, Bermagui NSW. The Vampires National Tour
The Vampires are touring Australia this March and will be reunited with our bassist Alex Boneham, who has been living in Los Angeles for the past few years. Check out the tour dates below.
In case you missed it, ‘The Vampires Meet Lionel Loueke’ was short-listed for this year’s Australian Music Prize, the first instrumental album to be on the list in its 13 year history.The AMP Chairman and lead singer of the Hoodoo Gurus, David Faulkner wrote in a recent review in the Saturday Paper:
“One of my favourite albums of the year was a jazz recording… Its beautifully constructed melody sounded so classic, so perfect, that it had already become deeply ingrained in my memory. Of course, I have been listening to this album a lot. This one’s a real winner.”
The winner of the AMP will be announced on Friday 9th March
The album was also in Ken Weiss’ top 10 listings for 2017 in Cadence Magazine, and #1 on Fred Kunzmann’s top 10 list for 2017 in All About Jazz.

The Vampires ARIA nomination and AMP Long-listing
We are thrilled to announce that we’ve been long-listed for the Australian Music Prize. They have invited us to do a popup gig at the Cooper’s Hotel in Newtown Thursday 23 Nov at 7:00pm. The AMP chairman, David Faulkner (also guitarist in the Hoodoo Gurus), wrote an article for the Saturday Paper on it, saying:
“One of my favourite albums of the year was a jazz recording, The Vampires Meet Lionel Loueke. The Benin-born, New York-based guitarist Lionel Loueke got together with Sydney’s The Vampires for a thrilling collaboration. The album flirts with many different musical flavours and rhythm feels, such as reggae, Latin and fusion among others, and these talented players make it all sound completely natural, which is a huge feat in itself. The 10 songs were composed by saxophonist Jeremy Rose and trumpeter Nick Garbett, and some of them already sound like standards to me. In fact, yesterday I was certain that track two, “Hard Love”, was a song I had heard elsewhere until a fruitless Google search persuaded me otherwise. Its beautifully constructed melody sounded so classic, so perfect, that it had already become deeply ingrained in my memory. Of course, I have been listening to this album a lot. Art Omi Music Residency
Last month I was fortunate enough to participate in a 17 day residency at Art OMI, an arts centre in Ghent, New York, with a dozen musician from all over the world. The purpose of the residency was to collaborate, share ideas and create new ways to engage with each others musical background. We had several performances, one at ?Hudson’s Basilica, a live recording on WGXC Radio, and a finale concert at Art OMI’s sculpture garden. I made some great new friends and left feeling inspired, enriched and hopeful to create some exciting new collaborations in the future. Read my blog post here

Iron in the Blood wins 2017 Bell Award!
Extremely stoked that my Earshift Orchestra’s CD Iron in the Blood received “Best Produced Album” at last night’s Bell Awards in Melbourne. Really grateful for the incredible work of sound engineer Bob Scott, who captured and brought to life this large production. Also to the many amazing musicians who played on the recording, too many to name here. It’s nice to know that Robert Hughes was an avid jazz fan (according to his widow), I only wish he could have heard it. Album out now on ABC Music, or read more here.

Within and Without feat. Kurt Rosenwinkel
Recorded in April 2016 in Berlin as part of APRA’s inaugural Song Hub for Jazz, ‘Within and Without’ features American guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel, arguably the most influential guitarist from his generation, alongside pianist Jackson Harrison, bassist Andreas Lang and drummer Tobias Backhaus. Some of the ideas and themes explored include recent travel experiences, relationship breakups, the creative process and inter-art references. The title track ‘Within and Without’ suggests simultaneous opposing forces; attraction and repulsion, enchantment and anguish, hope and despair. The title is also inspired by James Turell’s skyspace installation at National Gallery of Australia, ‘Within Without’, which transforms in colour with varying angles of fading natural light.

Jan 2017 Update
This year will see the release of two new albums: ‘The Vampires Meet Lionel Loueke’, and ‘Within and Without feat. Kurt Rosenwinkel’. I am also busy writing some new music for a festival at the Sydney Conservatorium, where I will be guest artist with their Jazz Orchestra, writing and performing a new suite I am writing. I will also be travelling to Germany again in April, ahead of visiting Jazzahead, and performing in Berlin in Vienna. Later in the year I will be undertaking a residency at OMI International Arts Centre in Ghent, New York, and hope to be visiting New York City and LA. Can’t wait!

National Jazz Awards 2016
At the start of November, I was fortunate to play at the National Jazz Awards as part of the Wangaratta Jazz Festival in Victoria, Australia. It was great to be a part of this prestigious annual competition, which showcases ten semi-finalists from across Australia and overseas, and features a different instrument each year. AAO 2016 Creative Music Intensive
I was fortunate to be part of the Australian Art Orchestra’s Creative Music Intensive at Tarraleah in Tasmania’s mountains this September. The CMI is a 10 day workshop with selected musicians from around Australia and overseas in a collaborative and learning environment. This year included guests Bae Il Dong and Sunny Kim from Korea, David and Daniel Wilfred from Arnhem Land, Christopher Hale, Simon Barker and Peter Knight. The workshop included a performance at Hobart’s MONA museum.

Liminality Premiere and Guest Soloist in Bons with Modern Music Ensemble
My new work for chamber orchestra, Liminality, will be premiered by the Sydney Conservatorium’s Modern Music Ensemble, with Daryl Pratt conducting, on Friday 2 September. The new work takes impetus from the tragic events to emerge from the refugee detention centres on Manus Island and Nauru, as well as being inspired by the music of John Adams, Ryuchi Sakamoto and Syrian music by Hossam Ramzy & Farid Al-Atrash. I am also performing as guest improvising soloist with the ensemble in a work by Dutch composer Theo Loevendie, Bons.

Thanks to everyone who came out to our SOLD OUT tour with Lionel Loueke, as well as our show at the Brisbane International Jazz Festival with guitarist Matt Smith. We had an amazing week spending time with Lionel and can’t wait to hear the new album, which is being mixed this week with Lloyd Swanton producing. Berlin APRA Song Hub with Kurt Rosenwinkel
Next week I will be travelling to Berlin to curate and perform in the very first APRA Jazz Song Hub. This will involve a collaboration between myself, pianist Jackson Harrison, US guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel, and two German artists, bassist Anders Lang and drummer Tobias Backhaus. 2016 Jan update
I have plenty of exciting musical things coming up this year. Over the summer I’ll be touring nationally with The Beautiful Girls, recording with Bernard Fanning, and touring the east coast and performing at Womadelaide with The Strides. I’ve got a new composition in the works for the Sydney Conservatorium’s Modern Music Ensemble, which will feature myself as special guest, to be premiered in September. I will be touring nationally and recording our 5th album with The Vampires in June with special guest guitarist Lionel Loueke. In April I will be travelling to Germany with pianist Jackson Harrison, performing in Berlin on 18 April. Here’s a few pics from the summer

The Strides – album launch and tour March 2015
The Strides are releasing their third album The Youth the Rich & The Fake on Earshift Music March 6 2015 with an east coast tour and album launch at Sydney’s Basement on Sat 7 March. Check out details on the poster below or click here to got to the Strides website.
Developed during a residency at Campbelltown Arts Centre in 2013, the album was recorded in a studio set amongst the rainforest of Ocean Shores near Byron Bay. The album was mixed by in Sydney by Ross Ferraro and in Brisbane by Paulie B, as well as being mastered in Los Angeles by Dave Cooley. The album features the vocals of band members Barbatian Ras Roni and Fijian Ltl Gzeus alongside special guests Ngaiire and Sierra Leonian Blacker Conteh.

Zorn’s Game piece ‘Cobra’ and a new trio @ Sizzle 2014

Bali – Gamelan study
Earlier this month I spent a week studying Gamelan Music in Ubud in the mountains of Bali at Cudamani Music School. I watched rehearsals and performances of their orchestra and took lessons with Balinese musicians and Australian ethnomusicologist and musician Doug Myers. Doug has been collecting field recordings of music throughout the Indonesian archipelago since the 1970s. Some of the recordings document songs that have been lost through development and loss of traditional customs.

The band’s saxophonist/composer Jeremy Rose describes the new album as “taking a new direction for the group.” “This album casts a wide net of influences but particularly draws from my recent travels and musical studies in Greece and Cuba. The album was also influenced by Nick Garbett’s travels to the Pacific island of Palau and Colombia, and Alex Boneham’s sojourn in Rome over the past year. These diverse musical ‘postcards’ come together conceptually well.” The album also features a debut for Jeremy on tenor saxophone, soprano saxophone and clarinet, as well as Alex Masso’s work on cajon and additional percussion. The album also features two remixes by former George bass player turned producer Paul ‘Tanuki’ Bromley.

New work premiere: “Between Worlds” for saxophone and string quartet
This week I had the first rehearsal for my new work ‘Between Worlds’ for string quartet and saxophone. The title is inspired by the experience of second generation immigrants – commonly described as ‘being caught between two worlds’ – as they face challenges of an ever shifting sense of self whilst facing pressure to conserve their country of origin’s culture. The music explores these themes whilst tracing the development of a folk melody I learnt whilst studying Balkan music in Greece – read my blog on the workshop I did last year here.

Campbelltown Arts Centre Residency with The Strides

I was in lock-down mode with The Strides this week at Campbelltown Arts Centre in Sydney’s west. The band was collaborating to write material for our third album, to be released August 2013. We went in with just a few sketches and came out with 13 new tracks. Plenty of jamming, late night sessions and extended musical discussions continued throughout the week.
We also undertook several mentorship workshops with local high school students, including some kids from the local juvenile detention centre and kids at the Claymore Community Centre (the subject of an ABC Four Corners documentary). The students proved an undying love for Bob Marley and hip-hop, with students stepping in to improvise and come up with their own arrangements and lyrics to some new songs.
